2024 Trends in Immunology

Highlights

  • The process of hematopoiesis, at steady state as well as during stress, is controlled by rhythmic/circadian sympathetic innervation.

  • Nociception titrates the extent of myeloid cell influx to sites of inflammation and the ability of such cells to clear pathogens.

  • Sympathetic innervation contributes to chronic inflammation, as in the case of atherosclerosis; it governs circadian and stress-induced arterial leukocyte recruitment and controls hematopoiesis that is accelerated by cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Recent work provides increasing evidence of the importance of nociception in modulating tissue repair, including in epithelial surfaces.
